What is termnet?

termnet is a text-based, multiplayer virtual world — a modern take on classic MUD (Multi-User Dungeon) games. You navigate a shared world of interconnected rooms using short text commands, chat with other players, pick up and use items, and earn an in-game currency called Termcoins (₮).

The world is set in the year 3000, inside the Neo-Terminus megacity — a 25-room environment spanning underground hacker zones, corporate towers, bio-labs, transit hubs, and deep subsurface levels. The game is entirely free and requires no download.

How to Connect

There are two ways to play termnet — pick whichever suits you best:

Browser

The easiest option. Open the link, choose a name, and start playing immediately. Includes a live minimap, status panel, and a command history (↑/↓ arrows).

Open termnet.megapki.pl
Telnet / netcat

Connect directly with any TCP client. Pure text, no extras. Great for power users and those who love the classic terminal experience.

telnet termnet.megapki.pl 4200
nc termnet.megapki.pl 4200

First Steps

When you open termnet in the browser you'll see a join screen. You can either:

  • Play as guest — pick any name (letters and digits, not already taken by a registered account) and join instantly. No password, nothing persisted.
  • Register / Log in — create an account with a username and password. Accounts persist your language choice, room location, inventory, and Termcoin balance across sessions.

Once you join, you'll receive a status banner showing your account type, current location, exits, balance, and inventory. You are placed in the Central Nexus — the starting room of Neo-Terminus.

Try these first:
look Describe the current room — see exits, items, and other players
help Show all available commands grouped by category
status Show your status banner again
north Move north (or use n, south, east, west, up, down)
who See who else is online right now

Commands

All commands are short text strings you type and press Enter. Most commands have a Polish alias too — see the full list below. Type help in-game for the grouped reference.

Accounts

You can join as a guest or create a registered account. Guests can chat, explore, and pick up items — but their progress is not saved.

Guest
  • Pick any unused name, join instantly
  • Can chat, explore, and carry items
  • Progress not saved between sessions
  • No Termcoin balance or friend list
Registered Account
  • Persistent location, language & inventory
  • Earn and spend Termcoins (₮)
  • Friend system and private messages
  • Can dig rooms, mint items, change password
  • Session token: stay logged in across refreshes

Passwords are bcrypt-hashed and never logged. The server returns a session token after login that is saved in your browser — you'll be auto-logged in on your next visit without retyping a password.

Termcoins (₮)

Termcoins are the in-game currency. Every newly registered account starts with 100 ₮. Guests don't have a wallet — register to earn and spend coins.

How to earn Termcoins
  • Explore rooms: Earn 10 ₮ the first time you ever enter any room — 25 rooms × 10 ₮ = up to 250 ₮ from exploration alone.
  • Daily login bonus: Earn 100 ₮ the first time you join on any given calendar day. Log in daily to keep the streak going.
  • Receive from other players: Use give <player> <amount> to transfer coins between registered accounts.
How to spend Termcoins
  • Minting new item types (AI device, teleporter, padlock, letter, etc.) costs Termcoins. Check the cost with help.

Items & Inventory

Items are objects you can pick up (get), drop (drop), and use (use). Each room can hold up to 5 items by default. Your inventory has no limit.

Registered accounts can mint new items with mint <type>. Some items can be combined with build <item1> <item2>.

🤖
AI Device

Every player starts with one. Type use AI to chat with an AI assistant. The conversation history is saved in the item and travels with it — even if you drop it and another player picks it up.

✉️
Letter

Registered accounts start with one. Type use letter to open a nano-like text editor. Write notes, stories, or messages. You can publish your letter to the TermNet network with a Server item.

🔒
Padlock

Drop it in a room to lock the room with an optional password. Only players who know the password can enter. Drop or pick it back up to unlock.

🌀
Teleporter

Type use teleporter <room name> to jump straight to any room, or use teleporter <friend> to teleport a friend to your location. Reusable — never consumed.

📡
Server

Publish a written letter or AI-generated file to the shared TermNet Network. Use use server <title>. Others can browse it with a Connector.

🌐
Connector

Browse the TermNet Network. Type use connector for a full index of published pages, or use connector <player> to see a specific player's pages. In the browser, opens a click-through popup.

🎙️
Voice Recording

Type record to capture up to 30 seconds of audio (browser only). Play it back with use voice recording. The audio is stored in the item and travels with it.

📄
File

Built by combining an AI device and a letter (build AI file). Contains an AI-generated response. Use use file to view it, or publish it to the TermNet network via a Server item.

The World

The game world is Neo-Terminus — a 25-room futuristic megacity set in the year 3000. Rooms are arranged in a 5×5 grid and connected by cardinal exits (north, south, east, west) plus some vertical exits (up, down).

The world has three main zones:

  • Underground / Hacker Zone (west column) — dark server rooms, hidden passages, and hacker enclaves
  • Central / Public Zone (middle) — the Central Nexus and community spaces
  • Corporate / Bio / Security Zone (east column) — corporate towers, bio-labs, and security checkpoints
  • Transit & Subsurface (south rows) — transport hubs, factories, and deep underground levels

15 of the 25 rooms have items in them when the world is first seeded.

Digging new rooms

Registered accounts can carve new rooms out of the world using the dig <direction> <name> command. The new room belongs to you and you can rename it (rename <name>), change its description (describe <text>), adjust item capacity (capacity <number>), and lock it with a padlock.

Language

termnet is available in English and Polish. You can switch at any time with the lang command — no reconnect required. Each player's language choice is independent.

# Switch to Polish
lang pl
# Switch back to English
lang en

Room names, descriptions, item names, system messages, and command help text all switch to your chosen language. Polish aliases are available for most commands — for example północ for north, powiedz for say, ekwipunek for inventory. Registered accounts have their language choice saved and restored on every login.
